There are are a number of menstruation dignity campaigns that are managed by NGOs or led by communities and individuals, in response to a need that exists throughout South Africa. They all aim to achieve the same purpose: to give a girl or woman her dignity.
Menstruation products and collection campaigns exist in various shapes and forms: hosting a “party with a purpose”, knocking on corporate doors (which often leads to once-off collection campaigns) and fundraising events that can bring in tens of thousands of rands at a time. All of these efforts create short-term impact but are not sustainable.
Most NGOs and sanitary dignity projects focus on schoolgirls. There still remains a large population of women, homeless and impoverished, for whom menstruation dignity remains a plight.
“Empowerment of and investment in girls are key in breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective enjoyment of their human rights.” – United Nations Resolution 66/170
